Deep within the inner chambers of the Three-Horned Rhinoceros Beetle

Interpol the alternative rock band from New York, just released their new single "Lights". The video was directed by Charlie White that excelled again with this video for this band (he directed the great video "Evil" too). The concept, the art direction, the colour and the montage are really great. Strange and poetic, the video takes us back with a futuristic feel to an ancient sensibility. A beautiful and strong ritual that you can see here. It's also available to download from their website.

Nightwalkers and Alchemists

Lisa Billvik
and Nicomi Nix Turner have both a great use of graffite and soft shadows, that they use to portray a strange, nocturnal and magical world. Lisa Billvik's characters are like sleepwalkers in a world between dream and reality, on the other side, Nicomi Nix Turner is deeply influenced by alchemy and nocturnal life and his compositions are very well crafted.

Lights and Shadows

Shadow theater is the fullest expression of black and white, and I really don't know why I have not post anything related to it before. But this video deserves the post, it is specially beautiful, the characters are simple and naïf and the music is amazing. This dreamlike short was made by Johannes Nyholm for the song Twice of Little Dragon and it will be made into a short film called "Dreams from the woods", can't wait...Watch it here

FRANZ VON BYROS

This entry is dedicated to my decadence-lover, talented boyfriend and is about a unique artist that opposed himself to the moral restraints of his time. His name is Franz Von Byros, he was born in Zagreb in 1866, now Croatia but then it was Austria. He made illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy and other books, but he was best known for his erotic drawings published in his controversial "Tales at the Dressing Table" portfolio."In 1911 he was persecuted by the Munich police because of his illustrations and was forced into exile from Germany". I hope you will enjoy his intricate, elegant, beautiful and erotic work, as I do. If you want to see more go here.and here.

The old picture

It's interesting the mix of influences that creates an artist style, I can say that for me is a mix of old etchings, fantastic films, children's literature and of course a lot of old pictures. Here is a website that turns out to be a great resource if you like vintage photography is called the old picture and it's a great archive, I specially like these three collections: beauty, Eskimos and Facial hair.

Creepy fun!

Flush's debut single "Losers" featuring Riz MC and Envy is so much fun...specially when accompanied with this video. The illustration are made by Dan Hillier an old favourite of mine. This eccentric, creepy and kind of home-made video really makes me want dance, draw and make some animation of my own. Advice: please go and see it directly from youtube by clicking at the video because I can't fix the size of it in here.

Happy Women's day

A post literally fell from the sky on this "día de la mujer", I really don't celebrate this day I think is kind of ironic because there is not a man's day, so it is intrinsically excluding, but it can be a good day for reflection on women's part in the world. Yulia is a french shortfilm in black and white made by rotoscoping a 3D film, I find this extremely interesting because it shows how animators are looking back to the handmade; from high technology to low-tech beauty. Check the film's website here.

Alice in Wonderland Fever

I can't wait to go see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and I think is a good time to see this beautiful version that it doesn't have for sure the visual effects of the new release but is for sure a treasure. Here it is, the first version for cinema of Lewis Carrol's book restored by the BFI National Archive from severely damaged materials. It was made more than 100 years ago!!

*Illustration giveaway*

Back to my eternal love: illustration. Three fantastic and strange artists, the first one is Kazuki Takamatsu (I hope is written well) he or she shows the dark side of Manga, great volume work and intriguing subject matters. The second one is Jesse Auersalo, she's really good at creeping us out with her incredibly realistic style and a kind of "gothic pop sensibility". Last but not least is Brett Manning a little bit sweeter but his detailed illustration transports us to an imaginary land where our indigenous roots mixes with a very contemporary sensibility.

Sunday's find

Massive Attack-Splitting the Atom-directed by Edouard Salier from edouard salier on Vimeo.

First single of Massive Attack's new album Heligoland, directed by Edouard Salier.I am not a big fan of 3d animation, I always thought it looked too geometrical and not very organic but in this video they use these things on their advantage. The music and the video are Very impressive as always for Massive Attack, pioneering with each new video in the mix of music and visual arts.

Back from the dead

Sorry for disappearing, real life doesn't give any time for blogging. As a apologetic gesture I will publish three videos. I hope to continue on, but who knows...tomorrow is monday again.
